What Happened?

A landmark Supreme Court decision in 2018’s Murphy v. NCAA opened the floodgates to online sports betting. Just a few years later, millions of people across the U.S. were wagering money on sports platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, FanDuel brought the excitement of sports betting to a mobile app, allowing users to bet money on sports at almost any time, anywhere.

FanDuel Lawsuits

FanDuel is now facing a growing number of lawsuits involving people who believe they were “exploited” by the platform. These lawsuits claim that FanDuel is designed to encourage high-risk gambling behaviors, without simple safeguards to prevent gambling addiction.

FanDuel of using misleading promotions like “risk-free” bets, utilizing user data to target vulnerable young people, and intentionally designing the app to be as addictive, exciting, and fun as possible.

Do You Qualify for a FanDuel Lawsuit?

Baltimore City Files Lawsuit Against FanDuel and DraftKings

In April 2025, the city of Baltimore filed a lawsuit against FanDuel for using “deceptive and unfair” tactics to exploit people, encourage compulsive gambling, while failing to implement safeguards against gambling addiction and massive financial losses.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said: “DraftKings and FanDuel have specifically targeted our most vulnerable residents — including those struggling with gambling disorders — and have caused significant harm as a result.”

NFL Employee Files $250 Million Lawsuit Against FanDuel

In October 2024, an ex-financial manager for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars filed a $250 million lawsuit against FanDuel.

The lawsuit was filed by Amit Patel, a man who claims that FanDuel “exploited” his gambling addiction. Patel admitted to stealing over $22 million from the Jaguars while managing the team’s virtual credit card program. He transferred approximately $20 million to FanDuel.

FanDuel Class Action Lawsuit Filed in California

In July 2025, a class action lawsuit was filed against FanDuel in California. The goal of the class action lawsuit is to stop FanDuel from offering fantasy sports contests in California because the contests are actually a form of illegal online gambling. Lawyers also want FanDuel to pay back money to people who were misled into placing illegal bets.

The lawsuit was filed against FanDuel Inc. and Flutter Entertainment Plc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California — Case 3:25-cv-05586.
