November 14, 2014 — Laboratory tests have discovered hidden corticosteroids and antihistamines in Mayhem, a popular bodybuilding supplement.
No adverse events have been reported, but the FDA is warning consumers who have been using the product to seek immediate medical attention.
Withdrawal symptoms from discontinuing corticosteroids can be serious, and may include muscle weakness, stiffness, fatigue, low appetite, weight-loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and more. These symptoms may occur after taking Mayhem for a couple weeks or at high doses.
The FDA warns that Chaotic-Labz has been selling Mayhem with hidden ingredients that can cause severe side effects:
“Corticosteroid use can impair a person’s ability to fight infections, cause high blood sugar levels, muscle injuries and psychiatric problems. … Antihistamines may cause drowsiness and affect mental alertness.”
These ingredients can interact with other medications you are taking.
Another serious problem is that corticosteroids suppress the adrenal gland. These glands normally make small amounts of cortisol, a hormone that is similar to oral steroids. It plays a vital role in immune responses and regulation of blood-sugar.
When you take a steroid, the brain can’t tell the difference and tells the adrenal gland to stop producing cortisol. When you stop taking the steroid, symptoms may include low blood-sugar, dehydration, weight-loss, disorientation, muscle acts, cardiovascular problems, and more.
