July 23, 2014 — O.M.G., a dietary supplement, contains hidden Viagra that is not included on the ingredient label, according to a Public Notification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The warning was issued after laboratory tests detected sildenafil, a generic version of the active ingredient in Viagra. O.M.G. was possibly sold in retail stores and on various websites, including www.sears.com.
The FDA recommends:
“Consumers should stop using this product immediately and throw it away. Consumers who have experienced any negative side effects should consult a health care professional as soon as possible.”
O.M.G. and Viagra are used to treat erectile dysfunction, a common problem that affects millions of men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease. Men with these diseases often take nitroglycerin or other medications containing nitrates. The problem is that Viagra can interact with nitrates and cause dangerously low blood pressure levels.
Viagra has also recently been associated with an increased risk of melanoma (skin cancer).
Although it is illegal for dietary supplements to contain prescription drugs, the FDA cannot test every supplement for hidden ingredients. Manufacturers also frequently ignore the law, putting profits above public safety. Consumers should be very cautious before purchasing supplements for sexual enhancement
