What Products Were Recalled?
In September 2026, Prime Line Distributors and Ferrarini USA announced a voluntary recall for about 1,513 pounds of imported ready-to-eat guanciale, which is a dry-cured pork jowl product that is commonly used in Italian cooking.
No illnesses were reported, but the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) classified this as a Class I recall, the most serious category.
The guanciale was produced at Est. 1937L Bome SRL in Italy in May 2026. It was imported to the U.S. in July 2026. The recalled guanciale is marked with “LOT: 263311US” and a “BEST IF USE BY DATE” of 05.16.27.
Consumers can also use the following information to identify the recalled product:
- Sold in cardboard cases of various weights, with 2 individually vacuum-packed “Prime Line Distributors, Inc. Guanciale Pork Jowl Product of Italy” packages
- Also sold in various weights in individual vacuum-packed packages marked as “Guanciale Pork Jowl Product of Italy,” with some labeled “DOK Guanciale”
- Sold in individually-wrapped packages in cardboard cases labeled “Guanciale Pork Jowl Product of Italy.” Some packages sold under the Ferrarini label
- Individually vacuum-packed packages of “Ferrarini Guanciale Dry-Cured Pork Jowl” (various weights)
Where Was This Product Sold?
Prime Line distributed products to food-service and retail locations in Florida.
Ferrarini has a larger distribution network, and its products were shipped to distributors and food-service locations in California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Texas.
Guanciale is sold sliced or cubed for use in pasta dishes, often at restaurants or deli counters, rather than to consumers in the original package. Consumers may have eaten this product at restaurants.
How Was The Problem Discovered?
The problem was identified by FSIS during routine tests conducted during import inspections, when a sample of the guanciale was positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Unlike many microbes that can cause food poisoning, Listeria can survive on foods that are stored at refrigeration temperatures. It can even grow on food in cold storage.
According to the recall
“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in commerce. FSIS is concerned that some products may be in food service and retail refrigerators and freezers. Food service and retail locations are urged not to serve or sell these products.”
