December 15, 2014 — Flat Creek Farm & Dairy, a Georgia-based producer of artisanal cheeses, has issued another recall for cheese after routine inspections discovered Salmonella contamination.
This is the second time in less than a year that Flat Creek has issued a recall for their raw unpasteurized cheeses. In both cases, sample of finished products collected by the Georgia Department of Agriculture tested positive for Salmonella.
Fortunately, no cases of food poisoning have been linked to the recalls. The company has destroyed all remaining stock of cheese made with raw milk and they have begun gently pasteurizing all of their products.
The most recent recall includes the following cheeses:
- Aztec Cheddar: 140802XAZ and A140725XGO
- Low Country Gouda: 140702XAZ
One year ago, Flat Creek issued a similar recall for 78 pounds of Aztec Cheddar and 90 pounds of Heavenly Blue Cheese (Lot 130916XHB).
In January 2014, Flat Creek updated the recall to include Aztec Cheddar lot number 130823XCAZ, not 130823XAZ as was previously reported.
Although healthy people normally recover within a few days, Salmonella infection can be life-threatening or deadly for people with weakened immune systems, young children, the elderly, and pregnant women. The FDA warns:
“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
