Infantino Baby Carrier Lawsuit

In May 2020, the guardian of a baby girl who developed hip dysplasia after being carried in the Infantino Flip Baby Carrier filed a federal lawsuit in California. The lawsuit claims the girl “suffered greatly, having spent months in a stiff brace for 12-16 hours a day at a young age.”

What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia occurs when the thigh bone slips out of the hip socket and dislocates the joint, either partly or completely. Babies with hip dysplasia often need intensive treatment, including braces, rigid body casts, and surgery. Left untreated, hip dysplasia can cause delays in crawling and walking, painful arthritis in adulthood, or disability due to frequent dislocation of the hip joint.

Hip Injuries Linked to Baby Carriers

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Looseness of the hips (minor laxity)
  • Hip dislocation
  • Developmental Dislocation of the Hip (DDH)
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Arthritis of the hips

Who Filed the Lawsuit?

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of “M.C.,” a baby girl from California who developed hip dysplasia after being carried in the Infantino Flip Baby Carrier from the time she was 1 month old until she was 6 months old.

Her caregiver used the Infantino Flip on a daily basis, often multiple times a day, and for extended periods, from June 2019 until October 2019.

As a result of the hip dysplasia, M.C. has been confined to a hard brace for 4 months, and is expected to keep using the hard brace for another 6 months. Every day, M.C. is in the brace for 12-16 hours, according to the lawsuit.

Unsafe Baby Carriers Linked to Hip Dysplasia

Baby carriers without enough hip support are linked to hip dysplasia. These carriers allow the baby’s legs to dangle straight down, which forces their hips into a straight, stretched-out position. Over time, the “ball” of the hip joint can deform the edges of the socket, or slip out of the socket altogether. This risk is greatest for babies under 6 months old, when the edges of their hip sockets are made of soft cartilage.

What is the Infantino Flip Baby Carrier?

The Infantino Flip Baby Carrier can be worn as a backpack on the caregiver, or it can be used on the front of the caregiver with the baby facing toward the caregiver or away. In the front position, the baby’s legs “hang straight down in an unsafe position,” the lawsuit claims.

What is the Problem?

The Infantino Flip Baby Carrier “presents a dangerous risk of hip dysplasia, particularly with prolonged use,” according to the lawsuit. The product is defectively designed because it has a narrow bottom that does not provide enough support for the baby’s hip development.

The Infantino Baby Carrier Lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California — M.C. vs. Blue Box Infantino LLCCase No. 3:20-cv-00934.
