UPDATE: Ford F-250 Rollover Roof Crush Lawsuit Filed in Georgia

In May 2023, another wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Georgia on behalf of a couple who died in a rollover accident when the roof collapsed on their Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck. The tragic deaths occurred just 3 days after a jury in Georgia awarded $1.7 billion to the children of another couple who died in a similar accident.

What is the Problem?

The roof may be too weak to survive rollover accidents on approximately 5.2 million Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks made from 1999 to 2016.

How Long Has Ford Known About Weak Roof Problem?

Ford has known about this weak roof problem on Super Duty pickup trucks for more than a decade, but avoided negative publicity and big jury verdicts (until now) by quietly paying “hush money” settlements.

Paralyzed Border Patrol Agent Files F-250 Rollover Lawsuit

Ford has been hit with many lawsuits for rollovers. For example, in 2008 a lawsuit was filed by Luis Pima, a 31-year-old U.S. Border Patrol Agent who was paralyzed from the neck down after his 2003 F-250 veered off the road, rolled over, and crushed him under the roof.

Jury Slams Ford With $1.7 Billion Verdict in Deadly F-250 Rollover Crash

That all changed in August 2022, when a jury in Georgia ordered Ford to pay $1.7 billion to the sons of Melvin and Voncile Hill, a couple who died in a rollover accident while driving a Ford F-250 Super Duty truck.

The Hills were driving an F-250 with a gross weight of 8,800 pounds when the front-right tire blew out, causing the vehicle to swerve and roll. Tragically, the roof completely flattened and crushed the Hills.

The couple had no idea that the roof was only rated for vehicles up to 6,000 pounds, which was the government standard when it was built.

From 1999 through 2016, Ford manufactured the F-250 Super Duty and millions of other trucks that weighed much more than 6,000 pounds, but did not bother to strengthen the roof to survive rollovers.

Lawyers claim that Ford decided not to strengthen the roof in an effort to cut manufacturing costs and maximize profits on the heavier trucks.

The jury was clearly convinced that Ford has known about the weak roof problem on the Hill’s truck (and millions of other trucks) for years — but failed to fix the problem, issue a recall, or warn the public.

Ford Hit By 162 Lawsuits for Rollover Roof Crush Accidents

According to court documents in the Hill’s case, at least 162 lawsuits have been filed against Ford for rollover accidents when the roof caved in. Ford also admitted that it is aware of 83 rollover accidents when the roof failed, crushing people inside. All of these tragic incidents involve Ford Super Duty trucks manufactured from 1999 through 2016.

Does My F-250 Have a Weak Roof?

Ford re-designed the F-250 with a stronger roof in 2017. If your truck was built before 2017 (and especially if it weighs more than 6,000 pounds), the roof may not be strong enough to survive a rollover.

After years of fighting stricter roof-strength standards, Ford was finally forced to strengthen the roofs on their heavier trucks in 2017. That was the deadline set by auto-safety regulators for manufacturers to boost the roof strength on vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds.

Roof Crush and Spinal Cord Injuries

Paralysis and other devastating spinal cord injuries are extremely common in rollovers and roof crush accidents. This is because the person’s head hits the roof or the ground, breaking their neck and damaging the nerves in their spine.

The long-term complications may include:

  • Paralysis
  • Loss of muscle movement in a body part or region
  • Numbness in the affected muscles
  • Chronic pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Need for lifelong care
  • Death
