December 2, 2013 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Abbott Diabetes Care have announced a voluntary recall for thousands of FreeStyle Blood Glucose Test Strips. The strips may produce an erroneously low blood-sugar reading, with potentially life-threatening results for a diabetic patient.
The recall announcement was issued on November 27, 2013. Problems may occur if the FreeStyle test strips are used with the FreeStyle or FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meters (recalled in February 2014), which haven’t been produced since 2010, or the OmniPod Insulin Management System.
The recalled test strips had an expiration-date from May 2014 – May 2014. Products included in the recall:

This is the second time Abbott has recalled blood-sugar test strips this year. In May 2013, another Class 1 recall was issued for approximately 50,000 FreeStyle Insulix Blood Glucose Meters. In patients with extremely high blood-sugar, the meter could read blood-sugar results 1024 mg/dL below a patient’s actual blood-sugar levels.
