December 20, 2023 — Fresh Express has recalled bags of fresh spinach that may be contaminated with Listeria.
The recall involves Fresh Express Spinach (8-oz. bags) and Publix Spinach (9-oz. bags). Both items are labeled with Bag Code G332, which is located on the front of the package under the use-by date.
There were no reports of any illnesses as of December 2023, but a random package of spinach tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture.
Both of the spinach products were sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. In addition, the recalled bags of Publix Spinach were also sold in South Carolina and Tennessee.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe and sometimes fatal food poisoning infections that spread beyond the digestive system. Pregnant women may also suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infection of the newborn baby.
Fresh Express is asking customers to throw out the recalled spinach and contact the store where it was purchased for a full refund. For more information, call Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at (800) 242-5472 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
