BrightFarms Salad Kits Recalled for Listeria Risk

In January 2024, BrightFarms recalled a baby spinach product and several types of salad kits that may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria. According to the recall, Listeria was found in the baby spinach, but the other salad kits were recalled as a precaution due to a risk of cross-contamination.

What Happened?

No illnesses were reported as of January 2024, but the spinach tested positive for contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the recall notice.

The salad was greenhouse-grown and supplied by Element Farms, a company based in Pompton Plains, New Jersey:

“The recall of spinach was initiated after routine sampling conducted by Element Farms yielded a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes. Due to potential cross-contamination at BrightFarms’s Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania facility, BrightFarms is also recalling a limited quantity of four select salad kit products.”

How To Identify Recalled Salads

The recall involves the following salad kits:

  • BrightFarms Baby Spinach
  • BrightFarms Mediterranean Crunch Kit
  • BrightFarms Chickpea Caesar Crunch Kit
  • BrightFarms Bacon Ranch Crunch Kit
  • BrightFarms Southwest Chipotle

These salad kits were distributed to retailers in 7 states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

What Is The Risk?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive on refrigerated foods, such as salad kits. The food may be contaminated even if it does not look, smell, or taste spoiled.

People who eat food that is contaminated with Listeria may develop a severe, life-threatening case of food poisoning. The bacteria may spread beyond the digestive system to other parts of the body, leading to sepsis, meningitis, pregnancy complications, or death.

BrightFarms Salads Recalled AFter Salmonella Outbreak

In July 2021, BrightFarms recalled salad kits after an outbreak of Salmonella infected at least 31 people in 4 states, including 4 people who were hospitalized.

At least 15 people who were interviewed said they ate or bought a variety of BrightFarms packaged salad greens before they got sick, including Sunny Crunch, 50/50 Spring & Spinach, Harvest Crunch, and Butter Crisp, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
