October 2, 2015 — Aspen Foods is expanding a recall to include another 561,000 pounds of frozen, raw chicken breasts that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recall was issued after inspectors found the same strain of Salmonella Enteritidis during testing.
Aspen Foods recalled 1.9 million pounds of raw, frozen chicken dinners back in July 2015.
Five illnesses, including two hospitalizations, were linked to the products by health officials in Minnesota and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The earliest illnesses were reported in May 2015. Another outbreak was linked to frozen chicken Kiev products last year in Minnesota.
The problem is that the products look like ready-to-eat chicken dinners and are often sold next to fully-cooked products in the grocery store. Consumers may not realize that the products are uncooked (raw) and must be heated to an internal temperature of 165ºF before they are safe to eat.
