8.2 Million Defective Bags of Laundry Pods Recalled
On April 5, 2024, Procter & Gamble recalled 8.2 million defective bags of Gain Flings and other laundry detergent pods that pose a deadly safety risk.
What is the Problem?
The recalled bags of Gain Flings were sold in defective flexible film packages that can split open near the zipper-track, making them impossible to close completely. According to the recall:
“The outer packaging meant to prevent access to the contents can split open near the zipper track, posing a risk of serious injury to children and other vulnerable populations if the contents of the laundry detergent packets are ingested, as well as posing a risk of skin or eye injuries.”
Swallowing Laundry Pods Can Be Deadly
There is also a risk of death if a large quantity of laundry detergent is swallowed, according to the recall notice. Gain Flings and other “pod”-style laundry products contain highly-concentrated chemicals that are more likely to cause severe injuries or death if they are swallowed.
When & Where Laundry Pods Were Sold
These defective plastic bags were manufactured after September 2023 and distributed nationwide in the U.S. at major stores like Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other websites.
Did Any Children Swallow Laundry Pods?
At least 4 children accessed laundry pods after September 2023, including 3 children who ingested the laundry detergent, according to the manufacturer. However, it is unknown if the children were able to access the pods because they were packaged in defective bags.
What Gain Flings Were Recalled?
The recall involves 8.2 million bags of Gain Flings, Tide Pods, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods in flexible film bags that were manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024.
The recalled Gain Flings products include:
- Gain Flings Original
- Gain Flings Moonlight Breeze Scent
- Gain Flings Blissful Breeze Scent
- Gain Flings Spring Daydream Scent
- Gain Flings Plus Ultra Oxi
- Gain Flings Plus Odor Defense
