8.2 Million Bags of Tide Pods & Other Laundry Detergents Recalled for Safety Hazard

In April 2024, Procter & Gamble (P&G) announced a recall for 8.2 million defective plastic bags of Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods Liquid Laundry Detergent packets due to a deadly safety hazard.

What is the Problem?

The recall involves Tide Pods that were sold in flexible film bags. The problem is that the “outer packaging meant to prevent access to the contents can split open near the zipper track,” according to the recall.

These bags may be impossible to close, which poses a safety hazard if children or other vulnerable populations are able to access the pods.

What is the Risk?

There is a risk of serious injury or death if children or other vulnerable populations swallow a Tide Pod or other laundry detergent packet. There is also a risk of skin or eye injuries from contact with the highly-concentrated liquid laundry detergent that is contained in a Tide Pod.

“Ingestion of a large quantity of any surfactant-containing household cleaning products can cause death among individuals with underlying health issues,” according to the recall warning.

Were Any Children Injured?

P&G said there were 4 reports of children in the U.S. who accessed the liquid laundry packets since September 2023, including 3 children who ingested them, but it is unknown if the laundry pods were packaged in a defective plastic bag.

How To Identify Recalled Bags of Tide Pods

Consumers can check to see if their bag of Tide Pods is part of the recall by checking the lot code on the bottom of the bag package. The recalled lot codes are listed at: www.pg.com/bags.

What Bags of Tide Pods Were Recalled?

The recall involves 8.2 million bags of laundry pods that were manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024, including certain Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods.

The following Tide Pods products are affected by the recall:

  • Tide Pods Original
  • Tide Pods Spring Meadow Scent
  • Tide Pods Light
  • Tide Simply Pods Plus Oxi Boost
  • Tide Pods Clean Breeze Scent
  • Tide Pods Free & Gentle
  • Tide Pods Oxi
  • Tide Pods Ultra Oxi

Where Were They Sold?

These packages were sold nationwide at Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other websites from September 2023 through present.

What Should I Do?

If your bag of Tide Pods is part of the recall, you should immediately secure it out of sight and reach of children and contact P&G for a full refund and a free replacement child-resistant bag to store the product. P&G will also send a free cabinet lock for securing laundry materials.
