What is the problem?
March 17, 2015 — The FDA has issued a recall for dozens of organic products that may cause food poisoning because they contain organic garlic powder that might be contaminated with Salmonella.
There have been no reports of food poisoning linked to these products.
The products were sold in all 50 states and some parts of Canada. The following brands are affected:
- Frontier
- Simply Organic
- Whole Foods
Did You Have Food Poisoning?
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections. The risk is highest for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. However, even health adults can suffer debilitating symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
If the infection spreads, it can cause deadly complications:
“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditic and arthritis.”

What is Being Done?
Frontier Co-Op blames the problem on raw material that was supplied to the company. Contamination was discovered by the FDA during testing of products in the supply chain. To mitigate this risk in the future, Frontier has implemented additional testing that goes “beyond FDA guidelines” and further precautions in the supply chain.
