March 19, 2015 — A recall for organic garlic powder has expanded to include products sold in bulk under the Natural Grocers brand.
The recall was issued by Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets Inc., after the company was notified of a positive Salmonella test in raw garlic powder that was supplied to the company and re-packaged under the Natural Grocers brand.
Just days ago, nearly 40 products containing organic garlic powder were recalled by Frontier Co-Op. Those products included dozens of powdered spices, sauces, and seasoning mixes sold under the Frontier, Simply Organic, and Whole Foods brands.
No illnesses have been linked to any of the garlic powder recalls.
Natural Grocers is only recalling products that were marked with the following Julian packed-on dates:
- 61-15, 40-15, 20-15, 351-14, 006-15, 316-14, 329-14, 288-14, 301-14, 275-14, 267-14, 252-14, 237-14
Those products were sold in clear plastic bags with the Natural Grocers label. They came in a variety of size ranges between 0.25-0.30 pounds. They were sold in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
According to the FDA, Salmonella can pose life-threatening infection risks — especially in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Serious complications may include bloodstream infections, arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
