What is a Portable Generator?
Generators are life-saving tools that provide electricity when the regular supply of electricity is interrupted. A portable generator can power medical devices, essential appliances and other devices. Campers and people with RVs also use portable generators to charge phones, power mini-fridges, and even check e-mail on their laptops.
Generator Recalls for Fire Hazards
Examples of recent recalls for portable generators:
- Echo EGi-2300 Watt Generators
- Westinghouse Portable Generators (WGen5300DFv and iGen4500DF Dual-Fuel Portable Generators)
- Westinghouse iGEN2500 and iPro2500 Portable Generators
- Honda Portable Generators (EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i, EB2800i and EG2800i)
- And more
ECHO Generator Recall
In July 2021, ECHO recalled about 3,700 ECHO EGi-2300 Watt Generators due to a fire hazard. There were 4 reports of the generator overheating or catching on fire. The generators were sold from February 2020 through June 2021 for about $850.
Honda Generator Recalls
In March 2020, America Honda recalled about 340,000 portable generators after 10 fires were reported. The recall involves Honda EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion and EU2200i Camo Portable Generators. According to Honda, the “inverter assembly can short circuit with the presence of salt water. This causes the unit to smoke or catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.”
In December 2017, Honda recalled about 34,000 Honda portable gasoline generators with model numbers EB2800i and EG2800i because the carburetor can leak gasoline, posing fire and burn hazards. There were 38 reports of fuel leakage from the generators. They were sold by Honda dealers and Home Depot stores nationwide from September 2016 through November 2017 for about $1,150.
Westinghouse Generator Recalls
In September 2020, MWE Investments recalled about 7,500 Westinghouse dual-fuel portable generators after 26 reports of fuel leaking from the fuel valve. No fires were reported. The recall involves the Westinghouse WGen5300DFv and Westinghouse iGen4500DF Dual Fuel Inverter Portable Generators with manufacture dates from October 2019 through December 2019.
In December 2017, Westinghouse recalled about 4,500 Westinghouse iGen2500 and iPro2500 portable inverter generators due to a fire hazard. There were 4 reports of the recalled generators overheating and catching on fire. They were sold from June 2017 through October 2017 for $580 to $600.
How to Prevent Generator Fires
Due to the risk, experts recommend taking these steps to prevent Generator Fires:
- Never store fuel for your generator inside your home or close to a fuel-burning appliance. Gas, propane, kerosene and other flammable liquids should be stored outside of living areas, in a properly-labeled, non-glass container.
- Before re-fueling your generator, turn it off and let it cool down. Gasoline that spills on a hot engine can ignite and catch on fire.
