UPDATE: Generac Recalls Portable Generators After 3 People Burned
In September 2023, Generac recalled about 64,000 Generac Portable Generators because they can expel fuel and cause severe burn injuries.
Pressure can build up inside the fuel tank due to inadequate ventilation, which can cause fuel to shoot out when the tank is opened. There were 27 reports of fuel shooting out onto people, including 3 people who were severely burned.
The recalled generators include type GP15000E, with model numbers G0057341, G0057342, 005734R1, and 005734R2, as well as type GP17500E, with model numbers G0057351, G0057352, 005735R1, and 005735R2.
They were sold nationwide from April 2011 until June 2023 for between $3,300 and $3,650.
Safety Officials Re-Announce Generac Generator Recall After More Injuries
In November 2022, safety officials re-announced a recall for more than 321,000 Generac Generators after more injuries were reported. In total, there have been 37 injury reports, 24 resulting in finger amputations, and 5 resulting in finger crushing injuries.
Generac Generators Recalled for Finger Amputation Hazard
On July 29, 2021, Generac Power Systems recalled about 321,160 Generac® and DR® 6500-Watt and 8000-Watt portable generators due to a serious injury hazard, including finger amputations and crushing injuries.
What is the Problem?
The problem is that “an unlocked handle can pinch consumers’ fingers against the generator frame when the generator is moved, posing finger amputation and crushing hazards,” according to the recall.
What Generators Were Recalled?
The recall involves model-years 2013 through 2021 portable generators, including the Generac® XT8000E, XT8000EFI, GP6500, GP6500E, GP8000E, HomeLink 6500E and DR® PRO 6500M and PRO 6500E.
The recalled generators havea single, U-shaped, two-grip, flip-up pin-lock handle to help move the generator. Generac is offering a free repair kit that includes a handle-guard.
Consumers can check specific unit type, model number, and serial number location information at www.generac.com/handleguard.
