December 2, 2015 — Glades Drugs of Pahokee, Florida has issued a voluntary recall for compounded multivitamin capsules that may contain toxic levels of Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol).
There have been several reports of adverse events associated with the vitamins, according to a warning from the FDA.
Vitamin D toxicity is a life-threatening illness that may show few symptoms in early stages. When symptoms do appear, they may include confusion, increased urination, increased thirst, loss of appetite, vomiting, and muscle weakness.
The symptoms are caused by high calcium levels (hypercalcemia), a life-threatening illness with short-term and long-term complications. Patients with liver disease or chronic kidney failure may be especially vulnerable.
Complications of Vitamin D toxicity:
- Hypercalcemia
- Intensifying irregular heart rhythms
- Increased effects of some heart drugs
- Kidney failure
- Calcium deposits in blood, soft tissues
- Bone demineralization
- Pain
The FDA warns consumers not to take the vitamins due to the risk of Vitamin D toxicity:
“Patients suffering adverse effects from high Vitamin D levels (Cholecalciferol) may not initially show symptoms. Therefore, patients who have received these compounded capsules should stop taking this medication and immediately seek medical attention.”
