GreenWise Frozen Blueberries Recalled After 12 E. Coli Illnesses Reported
In July 2026, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. recalled frozen GreenWise Organic Blueberries because they may be contaminated with E. coli O145:H28. The recalled blueberries have been linked to an outbreak of E. coli with at least 12 people sickened in Georgia and Florida since May 2026.
What Happened?
The blueberry recall is linked to a multi-state outbreak of E. coli that is under investigation by local health departments, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
How Many People Got Sick?
As of July 6, 2026, health officials have confirmed that 12 people were with the outbreak strain of E. coli in two states (Florida and Georgia). The victims include 4 people who were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 11, 2026 to June 5, 2026.
How Was the Outbreak Discovered?
The outbreak was discovered when health officials in Florida noticed a cluster of E. coli illnesses. On July 1, 2026, the Florida Department of Health notified CDC partners about a cluster of E. coli O145 illnesses. According to the CDC:
“State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. Of the 9 people interviewed, 7 (78%) reported eating frozen blueberries.”
What Is the E. Coli Risk?
E. coli O145:H28 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain (STEC) that can cause a serious gastrointestinal illness. According to the FDA, symptoms may not begin for up to 9 days after eating contaminated food. Symptoms may include:
- Severe stomach cramps
- Diarrhea, which may be bloody
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Nausea

Where Were the Blueberries Sold?
The recalled blueberries were shipped to Publix retail stores throughout 8 states, including:
- Alabama
- Florida
- Georgia
- Kentucky
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
- Possibly distributed to other retailers.
Health officials are urging consumers to check their freezers. Anyone with this product not eat it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
