What Happened With the Publix GreenWise Blueberry Recall?
In July 2026, Publix expanded a recall to include every lot of frozen GreenWise® Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries. The frozen blueberries have been linked to an outbreak of E. coli O145:H28 infections in Florida and Georgia. Publix said it stopped selling the products at the end of June, but consumers may still have this product at home in their freezer.
The all-lot recall expanded on a smaller one that was issued July 3 by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile. This is the company that grows and packages the blueberries so they can be sold in the U.S.
The previous recall was far more limited and only covered a single lot of GreenWise Organic Blueberries. Publix says it acted “out of an abundance of caution.”
How Was the E. Coli Outbreak Discovered?
Florida health officials first confirmed a cluster of E. coli O145 illnesses on July 1, 2026. When health officials interviewed people who got sick, many of them reported eating frozen blueberries from Publix in the days before their symptoms began.
“Seven of 9 (78%) cases interviewed reported eating frozen blueberries. Of which, 5 specified GreenWise-brand organic frozen blueberries purchased from Publix.”
After health officials in Florida shared their findings with Publix headquarters, the company pulled the products from its stores while the investigation continued.
How Many People Have Gotten Sick?
The FDA investigation has confirmed that 12 people in Florida and Georgia got sick. Four of those people had to be hospitalized. It is possible that the outbreak involves cases that were never confirmed or reported.
These illnesses began on dates ranging from May 11 to June 5, 2026.
What Is E. Coli O145 and Why Is It Dangerous?
E. coli O145:H28 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli (STEC). The symptoms typically begin a few days after eating contaminated food, and can include:
- Severe stomach cramps
- Diarrhea, which may be bloody
- Vomiting
Halthy people usually recover within a week without requiring hospitalization. In more serious cases, the infection can progress to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening form of kidney failure. There is a higher risk of HUS in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised people.

The recalled berries were shipped to Publix retail stores throughout 8 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
What Should I Do?
