What is the problem?

Healthy Life Chemistry by Purity First B-50 is a dietary supplement that was marketed as a B-50 vitamin by Mira Health Ltd., of Farmingdale, New York. In July 2013, it was pulled off the market after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered synthetic steroids. These hidden, dangerous ingredients were linked to 29 illnesses and one hospitalization.

The FDA warned:

“The product contained two drugs that are potentially harmful anabolic steroids—methasterone, a controlled substance, and dimethazine. These ingredients were not listed on the label and should not have been in a dietary supplement because they are illegal drugs and not dietary ingredients.”

FDA Finds Steroids in Vitamin Supplements

In August 2013, the FDA expanded the recall to include vitamins manufactured by Purity First Health Products. Laboratory tests also discovered dimethyltestosterone in a Multi-Mineral and Vitamin C supplements.

Recalled products include:

  • Multi-Mineral, 200 capsule bottles, lot number 12-829
  • Vitamin C, 200 capsule bottles, lot number E03Q

Mira Health Supplement Lawsuit Filed by Justice Department

In July 2014, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that they filed a lawsuit (PDF) and entered a consent decree with the proprietors of Mira Health Ltd., Michael S. Ragno Sr. (chief operating officer) and Michael R. Ragno Jr. (quality assurance manager).

The FDA inspected Mira Health facilities in July 2013 and found numerous violations of good manufacturing practices. Although attempts were made to correct violations, the defendants either did not follow through or failed to sustain corrections.

Under terms of the consent decree, the defendants are banned from manufacturing supplements. If they wish to start making supplements in the future, they must notify the FDA at least 60 days beforehand and retain an independent expert to inspect the operations and certify that necessary conditions have been met.
