Heated Blanket Burn Injury Lawsuit Filed Against Target
In October 2025, a woman from Pierce County, Washington filed a heated blanket lawsuit against Target and the manufacturer after she suffered severe burn injuries on her foot when it got extremely hot.
The lawsuit was filed by Wendy W., a woman who purchased a Threshold Heated Throw blanket from her local Target store in November 2022.
The blanket was manufactured by Berkshire Blanket & Home Co., Inc., and sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide.
What Happened?
According to the lawsuit, she was able to use the blanket without any issues for several days, but November 10 she was using the blanket when it unexpectedly overheated. She felt pain in her right foot and took off the blanket, only to find severe burns on all five of her toes.
She went to the hospital emergency room, where she was diagnosed with partial-thickness burn injuries.
Her lawsuit explains that “she was treated for several months and to this day still has pain, immobility, and sensitivity. She requires future medical treatment.”
What Does Her Lawsuit Claim?
The heated blanket lawsuit accuses Target and the blanket manufacturer, Berkshire Blanket & Home Co., Inc., of failing to adequately warn consumers about the risk of severe burn injuries.
The companies are also accused of selling a product that is defective “because of its unreasonable design,” or because this specific design “allowed it to get hotter than safe or intended.”
Her lawsuit was filed on October 23, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington (Tacoma Division) — Case 3:25-cv-05946.
Target Recalls Heated Blankets for Burn Hazards
In November 2023, Target announced a recall for about 29,840 Berkshire Heated Throws and Blankets due to burn injury and fire hazards.
Target Recalls Heated Blankets for Burn Injury Risk
Target said it received 9 reports of the Berkshire Heated Blankets and Throws becoming extremely hot, burning, melting, and overheating. No injuries were reported as of November 30, 2023.
The recall included heated blankets and throws that were sold under the Berkshire® and L.L. Bean® brands.
They were sold at Target, L.L. Bean stores, Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) stores, berkshireblanket.com, amazon.com, target.com, macys.com and qvc.com between August 2022 through October 2023 for between $50 and $180.
What Should I Do?
People who were burned by defective products may be able to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer. These lawsuits will seek compensation and justice for injuries and expenses, such as:
- Medical expenses
- Pain and suffering (physical and emotional)
- Long-term injuries (such as scarring or nerve damage)
- Decreased quality of life
- Lost income
- And more
