July 25, 2017 — Thousands of iRover hoverboards have been recalled due to a fire and explosion hazard.
iRover, LLC of Fair Lawn, New Jersey is recalling approximately 2,800 hoverboards with Model No. 87645 or Model No. 87644. They were sold for $300 to $400 at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Fallas Stores of Los Angeles, California between December 2015 and December 2016.
The problem is that the lithium-ion batteries can explode, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
“The lithium-ion battery packs in the self-balancing scooters/hoverboards can overheat, posing a risk of smoking, catching fire and/or exploding.”
There have been 2 reports of iRover hoverboard batteries overheating and smoking, but no reports of injuries or property damage from fires.
The recalled hoverboards were sold in white or black. They can be identified by a model number printed on a label on the underside of the board, and the word “iRover” printed on the front outer case.
iRover is asking consumers to immediately stop using the recalled hoverboards. Owners should contact iRover to learn how to return the hoverboards and receive a free UL2272-certified replacement.
