In February 2024, Target and Jetson agreed to pay a $38.5 million settlement to the parents of two young girls who died in a house fire that was sparked by a Jetson Rogue 42-Volt Hoverboard.

53,000 Jetson Hoverboards Recalled After Deadly House Fire

In March 2023, Jetson Electric Bikes recalled about 53,000 Jetson Rogue 42V Hoverboards (or self-balancing scooters) because they can overheat and catch on fire.

Two sisters tragically died in a house fire in April 2022, and there have been several reports of these recalled hoverboards burning, sparking, melting, or catching on fire, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled hoverboard were made in 2018 and 2019 and have a serial number beginning with the letters “ROG.” They were sold at Target, Walmart, other stores and online from August 2018 through November 2021.

Jetson Hoverboard Linked to Deadly House Fire

In April 2022, a 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old sister died in a house fire in Hellertown, Pennsylvania that was sparked by a 42-Volt Jetson Rogue Hoverboard. According to fire officials, the hoverboard was charging in a first-floor bedroom when it caught on fire just after midnight. The fire spread rapidly, trapping the girls in a room upstairs.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Walmart, Jetson E-Bikes

In September 2022, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the family of two girls who died in a house fire that was sparked by a Jetson Rogue Hoverboard.

The lawsuit was filed against Walmart and Jetson Electric Bikes LLC on September 21, 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania — Case Number 5:22-cv-037650-JFL.

What Should I Do?

This recall involves all 42-volt Jetson Rogue Hoverboards / Self-Balancing Scooters. These toys have two wheels and light-up hubcaps on the wheels, and come in the following colors: black, blue, red, pink, and purple, all with a black platform.

The name “Jetson” is printed on one side of the body and the top of the footpads.

The recalled units were made in 2018 and 2019 and have a sticker affixed to the underside of the board with a serial number beginning with the letters “ROG.”

If your hoverboard is being recalled, immediately stop using it and do not charge it. The battery must be disposed of in accordance to local laws. Do NOT throw the battery in the trash or use a normal battery recycling point at a hardware store.

Fire Hazards of Hoverboards and Micromobility Devices

Safety officials continue to remind consumers of the dangers associated with hoverboards and other micro-mobility devices, such as scooters and e-bikes.

“Consumers should always be present when charging such devices and only charge them with their supplied charger. Do not use recalled hoverboards or other recalled micromobility devices,” according to the CPSC.
