Ivar’s Soups May Be Spoiled and Cause Illness
In April 2023, health officials issued a public health alert for Ivar’s soups that can spoil early and cause food poisoning illnesses. The warning involves the following soups:
- Ivar’s Puget Sound Clam Chowder with Bacon
- Ivar’s Loaded Baked Potato Soup
- Ivar’s Rustic Zuppa Toscana Italian Sausage and Vegetable Soup
- Pike Place Fish Market World Famous Clam Chowder with Bacon
What Soups Were Recalled?
No recall was requested because the soups are no longer available for purchase, but some of the soups have “use-by” dates as late as August 2023. They may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.
What Happened?
The problem was discovered after Ivar’s received “multiple consumer complaints regarding bloated soup packages.” After investigating, the company found that some of the soups had spoiled prematurely.
Furthermore, “lab testing of the prematurely spoiled products found high levels of spoilage bacteria in the products,” the company said.
Ivar’s Soups May Be Unsanitary, Health Officials Warn
The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service warned that the soups “may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions, which may result in the product spoiling prematurely.”
These soups were fully-cooked, ready-to-eat products that were sold in the refrigerated section of major grocery stores.
The warning applies to the following Ivar’s soups, which were shipped nationwide in the U.S. and exported to Mexico:
