December 21, 2017 — Jack Brown Produce Inc. recalled certain “Apple Ridge” Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Golden Delicious apples due to a possible risk of food poisoning with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall involves “Apple Ridge” apples that were distributed in Michigan, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio by Jack Brown Produce from December 11, 2017 through December 16, 2017.
The apples are marked with the following Lot Numbers on the bag clip and/or bag label:
- Fuji: NOI 163, 165, 167, 169, 174 — sold in 3-pound clear plastic bags, 5-pound red mesh bags, tray-packed, or sold individually.
- Honeycrisp: NOI 159, 160, 173 — sold in 2-pound clear plastic bags, tray-packed, or sold individually.
- Golden Delicious: NOI 168 — sold in 3-pound clear plastic bags
- Gala: NOI 164, 166 — sold in 3-pound clear plastic bags, 5-pound red mesh bags, tray-packed, or sold individually.
The recall was issued after Jack Brown Produce was notified of a positive test for Listeria monocytogenes during routine sampling by their processor, Nybald Orchards, Inc.
The company has suspended distribution of apples that were processed by Nybald Orchards while they investigate the problem.
No illnesses have been reported, but people who are infected with Listeria can suffer a severe, life-threatening illness. In healthy adults, symptoms can take up to 70 days to appear, and may include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.
Pregnant women may have no symptoms, or only a mild illness, but suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infection of their newborn baby.
Jack Brown Produce asks consumers to destroy “Apple Ridge” Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious apples that were produced after December 11, or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
For more information, call Jack Brown Produce at 616-887-9568 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET) and ask for Lisa Ingalls.
