JEM Raw Nut Butters Recalled After 11 Salmonella Illnesses

JEM Raw Nut Butters Recalled After 11 Salmonella Illnesses

December 3, 2015 — An outbreak of Salmonella linked to nut butters has sickened 11 people in nine states and a recall has been issued by JEM Raw Chocolate, LLC, of Bend, Oregon.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that the outbreak strain has been identified as Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+).

The first illnesses were reported on July 18. Illnesses that occurred after October 30 might not be reported yet. No hospitalizations or deaths have been linked the outbreak.

State Case Counts: California (1), Colorado (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (1), North Carolina (1), New Jersey (1), and Oregon (3).

Nut butters recalled by JEM Raw include:

  • Cashew Cardamom – Sprouted Cashew Almond Spread
  • Cinnamon Red Maca – Sprouted Almond Spread
  • Hazelnut Raw Cacao – Sprouted Hazelnut Spread
  • Superberry Maqui Camu – Sprouted Almond Spread

The products were sold nationwide under the JEM Raw Organics brand-name in 1oz, 6oz, and 16oz glass gars from June 2015 through November 2015.

The CEO of JEM Raw says no products have tested positive for Salmonella, but six out of eight people (75%) who were interviewed by health officials specifically reported eating JEM nut butters before getting sick. The rest ate unidentified nut butters.

Salmonella infection occurs within 12-72 hours and typically causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps for 4-7 days. In rare cases, infections can lead to life-threatening complications:

“Infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
