Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Jule’s Cashew Brie
In April 2021, Jule’s Foods, of Carlsbad, California, recalled all of their products after a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella was linked to Jule’s Cashew Brie, which is a type of vegan cheese.
What Products Were Recalled?
Jule’s Foods recalled the following vegan products:
- Jule’s Cashew Brie
- Jule’s Truffle Cashew Brie
- Jule’s Black Garlic Cashew Brie
- Jule’s Artichoke Spinach Dip
- Jule’s Vegan Ranch Dressing
How Many People Got Sick?
Jule’s Cashew Brie was linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Duisburg, which is considered a rare strain of this bacteria. In interviews, 3 out of 5 sick people said they ate Jule’s Cashew Brie.
As of May 7, 2021, there were 7 illnesses reported in 3 states, including California (4), Tennessee (2), and Florida (1). The outbreak strains include Salmonella Duisburg and Salmonella Urbana.
Furthermore, health officials in Tennessee and California independently tested samples of Jule’s Cashew Brie. The samples tested positive for Salmonella Urbana, which is the same strain that made people sick.
Where Was the Food Sold?
Jule’s Foods were distributed in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, and directly to consumers nationwide.
FDA Identifies Cashews as Likely Source of Salmonella
FDA investigators determined that cashews were the likely source of Salmonella in Jule’s Cashew Brie. In response, the cashew supplier pulled all contaminated off the market. The cashews were not sold directly to consumers.
