What is Just For Me?
Just For Me® is a brand of no-lye hair relaxer that gained popularity in the 1990s for young girls. It was advertised with pictures of young African American girls on the box who had silky-smooth hair. Like other hair relaxers, Just For Me® was a “do-it-yourself” at home kit for straightening hair. The kit contained harsh chemicals that would dissolve the natural protein in the hair, making it easier to comb out.
Just For Me Hair Relaxer Lawsuits
In November 2022, lawsuits were filed by women with cancer, fibroids, or endometriosis who used Just For Me® hair relaxers to straighten their hair.
What Do Lawsuits Claim?
These women claim that Just For Me® and similar types of hair relaxers contain toxic endocrine-disrupting chemicals and carcinogens that are linked to women’s health problems, including:
- Breast cancer
- Endometriosis
- Uterine cancer
- Uterine fibroids
- Needing a hysterectomy
- And more
Toxic Chemicals From Hair Relaxers
Hair relaxers may contain a variety of harsh chemicals that pose health risks, including formaldehyde, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, parabens, phthalates, DEHP, bisphenol A (BPA), metals, and more.
The toxic chemicals in hair relaxers can get into the body through scalp lesions, irritated skin, and sores that commonly occur during the hair relaxing process.
Some types of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in hair relaxers are believed to mimic hormones like estrogen, which could potentially influence hormone-sensitive health problems in the reproductive system, like uterine cancer, fibroids, or endometriosis.
Study Links Hair Relaxers and Uterine Cancer
Concern about the long-term risks of hair relaxers has been growing for decades, but in October 2022, a major study linked hair relaxers with a doubled risk of uterine cancer. The study was based on data from over 33,000 women and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
The same team of researchers also published other studies that found higher rates of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and other life-threatening side effects associated with hair relaxers.
What is the Problem?
Despite the growing evidence linking hair relaxer chemicals and cancer (or other health problems), the manufacturers are not warning women about the potential risk.
Lawsuits accuse L’Oreal and other manufacturers of putting profits over public safety, continuing to sell dangerous hair relaxer products, and failing to warn women about the health risks of exposing themselves to the endocrine-disrupting chemicals in hair relaxers.
