Kombiglyze Class Action Lawsuit

Kombiglyze Class Action Lawsuit

Recent studies have linked AstraZeneca’s type-2 diabetes drug Kombiglyze with higher rates of heart failure and death. Studies also suggest it may increase the risk of pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation) and pancreatic cancer.

Overview

Kombiglyze contains a combination of saxagliptin (Onglyza) and metformin. It belongs to a class of drugs known as “incretin mimetics,” which mimic digestive hormones called incretins. This causes the pancreas to make more insulin, which helps lower blood-sugar.

Kombiglyze and Pancreatic Cancer

In March 2013, the FDA announced that it was investigating reports linking pancreatitis and pre-cancerous pancreatic tumors with diabetes drugs in the incretin mimetic class. Some experts are now concerned about a possible risk of pancreatic cancer, one of the rarest but deadliest of all cancers.

The FDA concern was based on a study published by Diabetes in which researchers warned:

“Since the standard of care of a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, because of the risk of conversion to malignancy, even if benign, is surgical resection [i.e. removal], patients exposed to incretin therapy would seem to be at increased risk of requiring pancreatic surgery.”

Kombiglyze and Heart Failure

In February 2014, the FDA announced that it would review the heart risks associated with Kombiglyze. They were concerned about results of a clinical trial linking saxagliptin with a 27% increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure. After reviewing the study for a year, the FDA also warned that Kombiglyze might increase a patient’s risk of death.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our lawyers are not filing a Kombiglyze class action against AstraZeneca. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of people who were severely injured by side effects.

About Class Actions

The problem with class action lawsuits is that members with serious injuries may not feel like their case got the individual attention it deserved. In some class actions, members have to accept “low-ball” settlements, higher attorneys’ fees, and never get to see their case taken to trial.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Our attorneys specialize in helping victims of defective drugs file lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies. We believe there is no excuse for failing to warn doctors or patients about life-threatening side effects of medications. If you decide to file a lawsuit, we may be able to help you seek compensation and justice for your injury, medical expenses, lost income, disability, and more.
