FDA Recalls La Jiao Shou Shen

La Jiao Shou Shen is a dietary supplement that contains Mexican chili powder or cayenne pepper. The manufacturer claims that capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers, can burn fat and accelerate weight-loss.

However, laboratory tests by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have discovered that La Jiao Shou Shen is not “all-natural” — it contains hidden pharmaceutical drug ingredients that were not listed on the label. These ingredients include phenolphthalein and sibutramine. Neither are allowed on the market or in supplements because they have dangerous side effects.

According to the FDA Safety Alert:

“Sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. This product may also interact, in life-threatening ways, with other medications a consumer may be taking. Studies have indicated that phenolphthalein presents a cancer-causing risk.”

Heart Attack Linked to La Jiao Shou Shen

According to a study published in 2012 by the International Journal of Emerging Medicine, a 25 year-old man developed severe chest pain and had a massive heart attack just five days after he started using cayenne pepper pills, originally called La Jiao Shou Shen.

What is Phenolpthalein?

Phenolphthalein is a laxative that was available over-the-counter for much of the 20th century in popular products like Ex-Lax and Feen-A-Mint. However, it was pulled off the market in the late 1990s after studies in rodents raised concern about carcinogenic (cancer-causing) side effects.

What is Subutramine?

Sibutramine is an appetite-suppressing drug that was originally sold under the brand-name Meridia. It was pulled off the market in October 2010 over concern about cardiovascular side effects, including heart attack. It may present significant risks to patients with risk-factors for heart disease or stroke. It can also interact with other medications.
