What is Lite Fit USA?

Lite Fit USA is a dietary supplement that is marketed for weight-loss. Drug-makers claim it can suppress appetite, boost energy, burn fat, and more. It is sold in some retail stores and over the internet (http://www.herbsultimate.com).

What is the problem?

The manufacturers claim it is “herbal,” but the FDA has discovered a hidden ingredient — sibutramine. This dangerous pharmaceutical drug is known to elevate heart rate and blood pressure. Sibutramine was taken off the market in 2010 over concern about heart attacks, stroke, and deadly cardiovascular events.

FDA Safety Warning for Lite Fit USA

April 10, 2014 — The FDA published a Public Notification to warn against using Lite Fit USA because it contains a hidden drug ingredient. This ingredient, sibutramine, can cause life-threatening interactions with other medications you are taking. It can also cause serious side effects. According to the FDA:

“The product poses a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke.”

What is Sibutramine?

Sibutramine is a prescription drug that was marketed as an appetite-suppressant under the brand-name Meridia. The chemical structure of sibutramine is similar to amphetamines.

It became controversial after studies found that it could increase the risk of heart attack and stroke for people with pre-existing cardiovascular disease. One study found that 11.4% of patients on sibutramine had a cardiovascular event, compare with 10% of patients on a placebo. In October 2010, the FDA published a Safety Warning and pulled sibutramine off the market.
