Margherita Pepperoni Recalled for Bacteria Contamination
In December 2021, Margherita Meats Inc. (part of Smithfield Packaged Meats) issued a voluntary recall for approximately 10,990 pounds of ready-to-eat unsliced Margherita Pepperoni that poses a food poisoning risk.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were reported, but the Department of Defense reported that a product tested positive for Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), a toxin-producing bacteria that causes diarrhea and vomiting in people.
“Those with compromised immune systems are at risk for more severe illness. Vigorous rehydration and other supportive care including antibiotics are the usual treatment,” the recall warns.
What Products Were Recalled?
The recalled pepperoni products were sold nationwide in 9-oz. plastic shrink-wrapped packages, labeled as “Margherita PEPPERONI” with Lot Code P1931C and a “use by date” of 12-14-21.
Symptoms of B. Cereus Infection
B. cereus is a bacteria that can cause two types of gastrointestinal illnesses involving vomiting and diarrhea. The symptoms usually start within a few hours of eating contaminated food and disappear within 24 hours. They may include:
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, and deaths have been reported. Elderly adults and patients with lower stomach acidity may be more susceptible to the diarrheal syndrome.
