MediHoney and CVS Wound & Burn Gel Recalled for Infection Risk

In January 2026, Integra LifeSciences announced a recall for all lots of MediHoney® Wound & Burn Gel and two specific lots of CVS® Wound Gel because they may not be sterile due to a packaging problem, which poses a risk of serious infections.

What is the Risk?

People who use non-sterile gels on skin that is injured or burned could develop a severe infection if the gel is contaminated with bacteria or microbes. At least 14 people reported injuries, and many were serious.

What is the Problem?

Packaging failures on MediHoney products may result in a breach in the sterile barrier. In other words, bacteria could reach the wound dressing or gel before it ever touches a patient.

Using a contaminated gel could introduce bacteria directly into an open wound or burn, resulting in a serious infection. According to the recall:

“Integra LifeSciences identified packaging failures related to the MediHoney Wound and Burn products that could lead to a breach in the sterile barrier. Use of product with a breached sterile barrier could lead to patient infection.”

How Many People Were Injured?

As of December 19, 2025, Integra LifeSciences reported a total of 14 serious injuries to the FDA, including:

  • 11 serious injuries linked to MediHoney Wound and Burn products
  • 3 serious injuries linked to CVS Wound Gel lots 2446 and 2428
  • No deaths reported

Injuries are consistent with wound infections introduced through compromised sterile packaging, which can be especially severe for patients already managing burns, chronic wounds, or post-surgical sites.

How To Identify Recalled Products

The following MediHoney products have been recalled — all lots are affected:

  • MediHoney Calcium Alginate Dressing Rope, ¾” x 12″ (SKU 31012)
  • MediHoney Calcium Alginate Dressing, 2″ x 2″ (SKU 31022)
  • MediHoney Calcium Alginate Dressing, 4″ x 5″ (SKU 31045)
  • MediHoney Gel Tube, 0.5 fl oz Twist-Off — Sterile (SKU 31805)
  • MediHoney Gel Tube, 1.5 fl oz Flip Cap — Sterile (SKU 31815)

The following CVS product is recalled — specific lots only:

  • CVS Wound Gel, 1 oz Tube (SKU CVS405406) — Lots 2446 and 2428 only (check the lot number printed on the packaging)

What Should I Do?

Do not use any of the recalled products. If you have them at home or in a clinical setting, remove them from use immediately. The lot number for CVS Wound Gel can be found printed on the tube packaging. If your lot number is 2446 or 2428, stop using the product. For MediHoney, all lots are included regardless of the number on the box.

If you used a recalled product and experienced signs of wound infection (such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, unusual discharge, or fever) contact your healthcare provider promptly. Questions about the recall can be directed to Integra LifeSciences at 1-800-654-2873 or custsvcnj@integralife.com. You can also review the official recall notice at FDA.gov.
