Mobility Transfer Systems Bed Rails Linked to 3 Deaths

In June 2022, safety officials warned consumers to immediately stop using Mobility Transfer Systems® adult portable bed rails after at least 3 elderly people became trapped, suffocated and died.

What is the Risk?

People can get trapped between the bed rail and their mattress, or within portions of the bed rail itself, leading to suffocation, strangulation, unconsciousness, serious injuries, and death.

“These products can create an entrapment hazard and pose a risk of serious injury or death to users,” according to the safety warning issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Manufacturers Refuse to Recall Dangerous Bed Rails

The manufacturers have refused to issue a recall or provide a remedy to consumers. The warning applies to around 285,000 bed rails that were manufactured and sold by Mobility Transfer Systems Inc. from 1992 to 2021, and then by Metal Tubing USA Inc. in 2021 and 2022.

How Many People Died?

One model of bed rail has been linked to at least 3 entrapment deaths, including a 78-year-old woman in a Michigan assisted living facility in 2006, an 85-year-old man in an Oklahoma nursing home in 2007, and a 90-year-old disabled woman in California in 2013.

What Models of Bed Rails Are Dangerous?

  • Freedom Grip (model 501)
  • Freedom Grip Plus (model 502)
  • Freedom Grip Travel (model 505)
  • Reversible Slant Rail (model 600)
  • Transfer Handle (model 2025)
