What is the problem?

Monster Energy Corp. manufactures a wide range of energy drinks. Most products contain high doses of caffeine, B-vitamins, sugar, and other ingredients. The problem is that many people have experienced health problems after consuming excessive amounts of energy drinks.

Monster Energy and Hepatitis

Monster Energy contains niacin (Vitamin B3) and other B-vitamins. The problem is that niacin is toxic to the liver in high doses. There are reports of people who developed severe liver inflammation, also known as toxic hepatitis or acute non-viral hepatitis, from consuming at least 150mg of niacin in energy drinks for several weeks.

Liver Risks of Monster Energy

  • Toxic hepatitis
  • Acute non-viral hepatitis
  • Liver inflammation
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Liver failure
  • Death

Wrongful Death Lawsuits

One wrongful death lawsuit was filed on behalf of 19 year-old Alex Morris, who died of “cardiac arrythmia and cardiomyopathy” after drinking two 16-oz cans of Monster every day for three years. However, a settlement was reached before the case could go to trial.

How Much Caffeine is in Monster Energy Drinks?

In 2012, an investigation by Consumer Reports found 92-mg of caffeine per 8-oz of Monster, but some products contained significantly more. The largest products come in 24-oz cans. Monster X-presso contained 220-mg of caffeine per 6.8-oz.

Teen’s Death Blamed on “Caffeine Toxicity” in Monster Energy Drinks

The report was published shortly after the first wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Monster. The victim, a 14 year-old girl with a heart condition, died after consuming two 24-oz energy drinks within 24 hours at the mall with her friends. Her death was caused by “cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity.”

FDA Releases Side Effect Reports

Soon after the lawsuit was filed, the FDA reported that Monster Energy Drinks had been associated with five deaths and dozens of hospitalizations since 2009. Reported adverse events included:

  • Death
  • Caffeine toxicity
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Heart attack
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Chest pain
  • Tremors
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • And more

Monster Energy Class Action Lawsuits

Monster Energy has faced several class action lawsuits in California. These class actions are seeking reimbursement for everyone who purchased a dangerously-caffeinated energy drink, rather than compensation for people with injuries.

One of the first class action was filed in 2012 by Alec Fisher, a man who accused Monster of marketing energy drinks as ‘dietary supplements’ rather than beverages to avoid scrutiny by the FDA. In March 2013, Monster re-classified their drinks as beverages and added caffeine content to the label.

Another class action was filed by a woman who says Monster Rehab Green Tea + Energy contains ECGC, a highly-concentrated extract of green tea that has been linked to liver failure.
