UPDATE: Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed After Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak

July 2019 — The family of a woman who died in an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Mount Carmel Grove City hospital near Columbus, Ohio.

Fentanyl Overdoses Given to Near-Death Patients in ICU

Dr. William Husel is an anesthesiologist who is accused of giving deadly doses of fentanyl to quicken the deaths of at least 34 patients under his care in the ICU of Mount Carmel Hospital in Ohio.

The allegations against Dr. Husel raise questions about whether he was trying to hasten the death of very sick patients in the ICU. For most of the patients, family members had already decided to stop life-saving measures for the patient — but now, Mt. Carmel Hospital is investigating whether some of Dr. Husel’s patients still had a chance to live, or if the families were misled about their loved one’s condition.

3 Patients Died After Hospital Was Aware of Problem

The first formal complaint against Dr. Husel was submitted to officials at Mt. Carmel Hospital in October 2018. Even so, the hospital allowed Dr. Husel to continue working in the ICU for the next 4 weeks.

During that time, 3 more of Dr. Husel’s patients died of fentanyl overdoses, and officials received 2 more formal complaints about his repeated practice of administering deadly doses of fentanyl to very sick patients in the ICU.

Mt. Carmel fired Dr. Husel in December 2018. The hospital also removed another 20 hospital staff and nurses from patient care during the investigation.

Mt. Carmel Wrongful Death Lawsuits

In January 2019, the first wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Mt. Carmel Hospital by the family of Janet Kavanaugh, a 79 year-old woman who died on December 11, 2017, only 18 minutes after Dr. Husel administered 1,000 micrograms of fentanyl through her IV.

Another lawsuit was filed on behalf of Bonnie Austin, a 64 year-old woman who was taken to Mt. Carmel for cardiac arrest. Not long after, she was treated by Dr. Husel and pronounced brain dead. About a week later, her husband learned she had actually died of an overdose of fentanyl.
