Nissan Recalls 200,000 Trucks for Rollaway Risk After 4 Injuries Reported

In September 2022, Nissan expanded a recall for more than 200,000 Titan and Frontier trucks from model-years 2020-2023 because they can roll away when shifted into “Park,” causing injuries or deaths. At least 4 people were injured in these rollaway accidents.

What Nissan Trucks Were Recalled?

The original recall on June 24, 2022 involved about 180,176 vehicles, including certain 2020-2022 Frontier and Titan trucks with 9-speed transmission.

The expanded recall on September 7, 2022 included the 2023 model-year. In total, Nissan recalled about 203,223 Titan and Frontier trucks from the 2020-2023 model-years due to the rollaway hazard.

What is the Problem?

The problem is that a part in the transmission called a “parking pawl” may not engage when the vehicle is shifted into park, which can result in a vehicle rollaway.

Nissan Asks Drivers to Use Parking Brake

Nissan will notify drivers of the recall on November 1, 2022. According to the recall: “If the customer does not engage the parking brake, potential for movement of the vehicle increases the risk of injury or crash.” Until the trucks are fixed, Nissan is recommending that drivers always apply the parking brake whenever they park the vehicle.

Nissan Reports 4 Minor Injuries In Rollaway Accidents

In a letter to dealers on June 24, 2022, Nissan said it was “aware of four (4) allegations of minor injury” related to the rollaway problem.

What is the Risk?

Trucks that roll away when the driver is not in control can easily cause severe injuries or death. The driver, passengers, or anyone nearby can be pulled under the vehicle and crushed by the tires. The vehicle can roll into an unsuspecting bystander and crush them, or roll away into traffic and cause a deadly car accident with an innocent driver.
