Amneal Pharmaceuticals Recalls Nizatidine for NDMA

On April 15, 2020,Amneal Pharmaceuticals recalled liquid Nizatidine Oral Solution (15 mg/mL) packaged in 480-mL bottles due to NDMA contamination above FDA limits. The follwoing with NDMA. The recall involves the following 3 lots:

Mylan Recalls 3 Lots of Nizatidine for NDMA Contamination

On January 8, 2020, Mylan Pharmaceuticals recalled 3 lots of nizatidine (150-mg and 300-mg strengths) after they tested positive for contamination with a cancer-causing chemical impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

The 3 recalled batches of nizatidine were distributed between June 2017 and August 2018. The following products are affected by the recall:

What is NDMA?

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a toxic substance that is classified as a “probable human carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It is a chemical impurity that is created during the drug-making process. NDMA is also a environmental pollutant that is commonly found in water and foods, meat, dairy and vegetables.

What is Nizatidine?

Azor® is an antacid medication that is sold as the generic drug nizatidine. This medication is used for the treatment of stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers. It is also used to relieve heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
