Northlight Tabletop Fireplaces Linked to Pool Fire and Flame Jetting Hazards

In May 2026, the CPSC warned consumers to immediately stop using Northlight Bio Ethanol Portable Tabletop Fireplaces because using them can result in uncontrolled pool fires and flame jetting from fuel containers, posing the risk of serious or fatal burns.

Gordon Companies Inc., the retailer of the Northlight fireplaces, has not agreed to a recall. The company objects to the CPSC’s warning. As a result, the products may remain in consumers’ homes and on resale platforms despite the agency’s safety alert.

The CPSC’s warning follows a broader 2025 consumer alert on alcohol and liquid-burning fire pits that violate voluntary safety standards. That earlier alert cited 2 deaths and dozens of serious burn injuries in connection with all type of tabletop fire pits.

What is the Problem?

The Northlight Bio Ethanol Portable Tabletop Fireplaces are round, square, or rectangular open containers that require consumers to pour liquid fuel into the container and then ignite the pooled liquid in the same location it was poured.

The CPSC describes the two specific hazards as follows:

“Using them can result in uncontrolled pool fires where flames burn across the surface of pooled or spilled alcohol, as well as flame jetting from fuel containers, resulting in serious or fatal burns.”

According to the CPSC, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, ethanol/bioethanol, and similar liquid fuels can burn with flame temperatures over 1,600°F and can cause third degree burns in less than one second.

Flame jetting can occur when refilling the fire pit if any flame is present. A small flame in the fire pit can be hard to see and can ignite the vapor inside a fuel container as the fuel is poured, causing an explosion that propels flames and burning liquid onto the consumer or bystanders.

How Many People Were Burned?

The CPSC’s May 2026 warning on Northlight Bio Ethanol Portable Tabletop Fireplaces does not include a specific injury count related to Northlight products. However, in a related 2025 alert covering the broader category of alcohol and liquid-burning fire pits that violate voluntary standards, the CPSC reported 2 deaths and dozens of serious burn injuries.

The types of injuries that have been reported from alcohol-fueled fire pits and tabletop fireplaces include:

  • Third-degree burns to the hands, arms, face, and torso
  • Burns from clothing ignition
  • Burns to bystanders standing near the product when flames jetted
  • Hospitalizations requiring skin grafts and burn unit care
  • Fatal burn injuries

How To Identify Recalled Northlight Fireplaces

The Northlight Bio Ethanol Portable Tabletop Fireplaces are round, square, or rectangular containers with a white, silver, or black base. The item numbers can be found on the product packaging and include the following:

  • Northlight IF91990 — Portable Fireplace, 10.5″, White
  • Northlight IF91991 — Portable Fireplace, 10.5″, Silver
  • Northlight IF91992 — Portable Fireplace, 13.75″, Black
  • Northlight IF91993 — Portable Fireplace, 15″, Black
  • Northlight IF91994 — Portable Fireplace, 11.5″, Black
  • Northlight IF91996 — Portable Triple Fireplace, 17.75″, Black

The fireplaces were sold online at NorthlightSeasonal.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, BestBuy.com, HomeDepot.com and other websites for about $35 to $90. The products were manufactured in China.

What Should I Do?

The CPSC is urging consumers to stop using the tabletop fireplaces immediately and dispose of them. The agency also states that consumers should not sell or give away these products.

Incidents involving injury or product defect can be reported to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov. Because Gordon Companies Inc. has refused to recall the Northlight fireplaces, no manufacturer remedy, refund program, or replacement is currently offered.
