Nutramigen Infant Formula Recall

In December 2023, a recall for over 657,000 cans of Enfamil Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula due to a risk of bacterial contamination that could cause deadly infections in babies.

How To Identify Recalled Cans of Nutramigen Baby Formula

The recall involves Nutramigen in 12.6 ounce cans with batch codes ZL3FHG, ZL3FMH, ZL3FPE, ZL3FQD, and ZXL3FXJ. The recall also includes 19.8 ounce cans with batch code ZL3FRW.

These recalled cans of infant formula have a UPC code of 300871239418 or 300871239456 and “Use By Date” of “1 Jan 2025”.

These cans were made in June 2023 and distributed primarily in June, July, and August 2023. The manufacturer said it believes that “much, if not all, of the products recalled in the U.S. have been consumed.”

What Happened?

Six batches of Nutramigen Infant Formula were recalled in the U.S. after Israel’s Ministry of Health said it found Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria in formula that was made at a U.S. facility in Michigan.

The recall was announced by the manufacturer, Reckitt / Mead Johnson Nutrition. No illnesses were reported in the U.S., but tests on samples of the formula from cans that were sold outside of the U.S. were positive for contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii.

The FDA also did its own testing at the facility in Michigan, as well as samples from the same batch that was tested in Israel, but all of the FDA tests were negative for Cronobacter. Even so, the FDA recommended a recall and the company agreed to pull 675,030 cans.

What is Nutramigen?

Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula is a specialized type of formula for infants with cow’s milk allergies, other food allergies, and colic. Nutramigen is manufactured at a facility in Zeeland, Michigan.

Nutramigen Formula Shortage Leaves Parents Scrambling for Alternatives

In November 2023, parents nationwide began reporting shortages for Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula. The shortage left parents scrambling to find alternatives, where there is little available for children with severe allergies to cows milk proteins.

What is Cronobacter?

Cronobacter sakazakii is a bacteria that is commonly found in the environment. It can also survive in very dry foods, such as powdered infant formula. Infections can cause severe, life-threatening complications such as sepsis (blood infections) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord).

Signs & Symptoms of Cronobacter Infections

The symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths, and abnormal movements.

Intestinal Complications of Cronobacter Infections

Cronobacter infections may also cause severe intestinal damage, such as Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), or spread beyond the intestines to other parts of the body.
