What is Ostarine?
Ostarine is a research chemical that belongs to a class of drugs called Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs). These drugs are widely used by bodybuilders, and illegally advertised as “legal steroid” supplements, when they are actually powerful pharmaceutical drugs.
Who Created Ostarine?
Ostarine was developed by Merck & Co. and GTx Inc. and tested as a treatment for cancer patients in 2009. It was designed to prevent bone loss and boost muscle mass.
How Does Ostarine Work?
Unlike traditional steroids and testosterone injections, Ostarine and other SARMs selectively target cells in the bones and muscles. In fact, Ostarine was developed for the treatment of conditions such as muscle wasting and osteoporosis.
Ostarine Bodybuilding SARMs
This makes Ostarine attractive for bodybuilders because it boosts muscle growth without causing a severe testosterone “shutdown” or other side effects, such as breast growth and testicular shrinkage in men, or hair growth in women.
What is the Problem?
The problem is that Ostarine is associated with severe, life-threatening side effects — and high doses of Ostarine are likely to produce many of the same side effects as traditional steroids or hormone injections.
FDA Safety Warning for SARM Side Effects
In October 2017, the FDA issued a Safety Warning about the side effects of SARMs:
“SARMs have not been approved by the FDA and are associated with serious safety concerns, including potential to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke and life threatening reactions like liver damage.”
