What is Enbosarm?
Enbosarm, also known as Ostarine, is a research chemical that was developed and tested by GTx Inc. and Merck & Co. as a drug to boost muscle mass and prevent bone loss (osteoporosis) in cancer patients.
How Does Enbosarm Work?
Enbosarm belongs to a group of drugs called Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs). These drugs specifically target cells in the bones and muscles. They are popular among bodybuilders because they are marketed as “legal steroids” with fewer side effects.
What is the Problem?
In high doses, SARMs may cause similar side effects as traditional steroids, such as a testosterone “shutdown” or testicular shrinkage. Furthermore, the long-term risks are unknown. Studies have found that some SARMs can cause rapidly-growing cancer in animals.
FDA Warning for Side Effects of SARMs
In October 2017, the FDA published a Safety Warning about the side effects of SARMs:
“SARMs have not been approved by the FDA and are associated with serious safety concerns, including potential to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke and life threatening reactions like liver damage.”
