What are SARMs?
SARM, or Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators, are non-steroid pills that are used by bodybuilders to stimulate male hormone (androgen) receptors in muscles and bones. Unlike traditional steroids, SARMs do not have to be injected, and they don’t target other cells or cause as many side effects in other parts of the body.

FDA Warning for Bodybuilding SARMs
In October 2017, the FDA issued a warned to bodybuilders that SARMs are not dietary supplements because they are unapproved drugs.
The FDA also warned that SARMs have unknown short-term and long-term risks:
“Body-building products that contain SARMs have not been approved by the FDA and are associated with serious safety concerns, including potential to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke and life threatening reactions like liver damage.”
Health Risks & Safety of SARMs
Nearly all SARMs are illegally advertised as dietary supplements when they are actually untested pharmaceutical drugs. In some cases, the chemicals in SARMs have been tested on laboratory animals and proven to cause cancer or other severe side effects. Another problem is that SARMs often do not contain what is on the label, after a study published in JAMA tested 44 “SARMs” and found that 50% contained a mix of untested drugs and zero SARMs.
Possible Side Effects of SARMs
- Testosterone shutdown
- Eyesight damage
- Kidney damage
- Liver toxicity
- Cardiovascular events
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Cancer
- Unknown long-term risks
FDA Seizes SARMs in Raid of Enhanced Athlete
One of the most notorious users of SARMs is Dr. Tony Huge of Enhanced Athletes. In December 2017, the FDA raided the California headquarters of Enhanced Athletes looking for the SARM ostarine, as well as 2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) and other research chemicals.
The FDA seized SARMs, raw materials, and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of finished and unfinished products, according to Enhanced Athletes CEO Scott Cavell.
Dr. Tony Huge has a YouTube channel promoting supplements from Enhanced Athletes. The videos have disclaimers like “Not For Human Consumption,” while showing people who consume the drugs, and endorsing their consumption for the purpose of bodybuilding.
Enhanced Athlete Hit With SARM Lawsuit
Enhanced Athlete was hit with a lawsuit in July 2017, after a competitor accused the company of false and misleading advertising of SARMs.
Federal Authorities Investigating SARMs
Lauren Horwood, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, has confirmed that Enhanced Athlete and its CEO are being investigated for “manufacturing and distributing unapproved substances for human consumption.”
