UPDATE: 5,000 Otis Elevators Recalled for Deadly Risk to Children

In December 2020, Otis Elevator Company recalled around 5,000 private residence elevators because children can get trapped between the doors and suffer serious injuries or deaths when the elevator moves up or down.

Recalled Elevators Caused “Crushed Spine And Abdomen,” Other Injuries

Otis reported “at least four incidents” of an Otis or CemcoLift private residence elevator that resulted in a crushed spine and abdomen, fractured hip, broken arm and feet, and bruising to the face and chest.

What is the Problem?

Children can get trapped in the space between the exterior landing (hoistway) door and the interior elevator car’s accordion-style door or gate. The exterior door locks the child in the space between the doors, and when the elevator moves to another floor, the child is at risk of being crushed or pinned by the elevator car.

Was Your Elevator Recalled?

This recall involves Otis private residence elevators that were purchased before 2012, and CemcoLift private residence elevators purchased from 1999 through 2012 for use in consumers’ homes.

Otis is asking consumers to contact the company to schedule a free inspection and the installation of space guard, if necessary.

Otis Elevators Linked to 34 Child Deaths

Otis Elevator, the world’s largest elevator company, reported that its swing-door elevators have killed or injured 34 children — almost all in entrapment accidents — in New Jersey and New York from 1983 to 1993, according to court records unsealed as part of recent lawsuits.

Otis Pays $3 Million Settlement in Elevator Injury Lawsuit

In 2003, Otis paid a $3 million lawsuit settlement to the family of a boy who suffered severe head trauma in an elevator accident. The family was at an inn when their 8 year-old son Tucker was crushed to death between the exterior door and the elevator car.
