Residential Elevators Recalls 31,000 Home Elevators After Child Crushed
In August 2022, Residential Elevators Inc. recalled about 31,000 home elevators after a child was trapped, crushed, and suffered a “serious spinal injury,” according to the recall notice.
What is the Problem?
Children can be crushed to death if they get trapped in the gap between the home’s exterior door and the elevator’s door or gate.
The exterior door typically looks like a normal door in the house, and the interior door or gate is attached to the elevator car. When the elevator moves to another floor, the trapped child can suffer horrific injuries or death when they are crushed by the moving cab of the elevator.
What Home Elevators Were Recalled?
Residential Elevators, Inc. recalled residential elevator models:
- Easy Rider
- Horizon Lift
- Luxury Lift
- Luxury Lift Hydraulic
- Luxury Lift Traction
- RE
How To Identify Recalled Elevators
The Residential Elevators brand name is printed on the light in the operating panel inside the elevator cab. The elevators are used in consumers’ homes. They were sold nationwide from 1986 through July 2022 for between $20,000 and $35,000 including installation.
What Should I Do?
Keep unsupervised young children away from the recalled elevators and contact Residential Elevators for instructions on how to measure for space guards to correct any hazardous gap. Space guards will be provided free of charge and assistance with space guard installation will be provided upon request. For information, visit https://www.residentialelevators.com/doorgaprecall.
Home Elevator Recalls
In recent years, tens of thousands of home elevators have been recalled to correct a hazardous gap. These recalls were prompted by horrific and tragic accidents, including a 7-year-old boy who was crushed to death in North Carolina and several injuries or deaths linked to thyssenkrupp elevators.
According to CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler:
“These injuries and deaths are ghastly. The gaps in residential elevators are truly a hidden hazard for homeowners, and for anyone who is visiting or renting a home with an elevator.”
