October 18, 2023 — The Texas-based chip company Paqui has pulled the “One Chip Challenge” after the death of a teenager in Massachusetts.
Paqui is a chip company based in Austin, Texas, and a subsidiary of The Hershey Company.
In early September, Paqui asked stores to stop selling the extremely spicy 2023 “One Chip Challenge” product.
The product is a coffin-shaped box that contains a single tortilla chip that is coated in Carolina Reaper and Scorpion Pepper powder.
The action was prompted by a report of a 14-year-old boy in Massachusetts who died on the same day that he ate the chip.
According to his family, the boy was given the Paqui “One Chip Challenge” by a classmate. After he ate the chip, he went to the nurse’s office complaining of a severe stomach ache. The nurse called his parents to take him home. Later that day, his brother found him unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Paqui said the company is “actively working with our retailers to remove the product from shelves,” but defended the product, claiming that it “continues to adhere to food safety standards.”
Even so, Paqui recalled the 2023 “One Chip Challenge” product in Canada after reports of “adverse reactions.”
