Harbor Freight Recalls 1.7 Million Pittsburgh Jack Stands

In July 2020, Harbor Freight Tools announced a third recall for Pittsburgh Jack Stands that can collapse suddenly during use. At least 11 people have been injured. Many of these recalled jack stands have manufacturing defects and welds that can split open and cause a lifted vehicle to fall.

What is the Risk?

No deaths were reported, but defective jack stands pose life-threatening safety hazards, such as:

  • Crushing injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Amputation of fingers or limbs
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Paralysis
  • Permanent scarring or disability
  • Death

Pittsburgh 6-Ton Jack Stand Recall

The first recall was issued on March 20, 2020, and it involved 454,000 Pittsburgh Automotive 6-Ton Heavy-Duty Steel Jack Stands. The recall was issued because a manufacturing defect in the ratchet teeth may allow the jack stand pawl to disengage from the lifting post. The jack stand can drop suddenly, causing injury or death to anyone under a vehicle.

Pittsburgh 3-Ton Jack Stand Recall

The second recall was issued on May 3, adding another 1.2 million Pittsburgh Automotive 3-Ton Heavy-Duty Steel Jack Stands that can collapse suddenly.

Harbor Freight Recalls Replacement Pittsburgh Jack Stands

In July 2020, Harbor Freight issued a third recall for Pittsburgh Jack Stands — this time, for replacement jack stands that were supposed to be “safe” alternatives to the defective ones. Unfortunately, a weld defect may cause Pittsburgh 3-Ton Jack Stands to split and collapse.

The weld defect was discovered in the Pittsburgh 3-Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands.

As a precaution, Harbor Freight also offered refunds for other Pittsburgh 3-Ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 56372 and 57308), Pittsburgh 6-Ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56368, 56369 and 56370) and Pittsburgh 12-Ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56374 and 56375).
