Polaris Sportsman ATV Recall
In March 2017, Polaris recalled all Sportsman 850 and 1000 ATVs (2015 and 2016 model-years) because they can catch on fire or cause burn injuries. The recall involves approximately 19,200 Sportsman ATVs.
Fire & Burn Injury Hazard
On both the Sportsman 850 and 1000 ATVs, the right side panel heat shield can melt and burn a rider or start a fire.
On the 2015 Sportsman 1000 ATV, exhaust leaks can cause fires and burns. The problem is that the exhaust springs can stretch and damage the exhaust seal, which can result in exhaust leaks. This poses burn and fire hazards.
Number of Incidents & Injuries Reported
The recalled Sportsman ATVs caused 4 minor burn injuries to riders. There are 47 reports of fires. Polaris received at least 793 incident reports, including side panels that warped, melted or burned.
Recommendation for Consumers
Owners of the recalled ATVs should contact Polaris to schedule a free repair and immediately stop using the ATV. Polaris is contacting all known owners directly.
