What Happened?

On July 29, 2022, Lyons Magnus LLC recalled 53 different types of protein shakes and coffee products due to potential microbial contamination. No illnesses were reported, but the “products did not meet commercial sterility specifications,” according to the manufacturer.

What’s the Problem?

Premier Protein Shakes may be contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii, a bacteria that can survive in very dry foods, such as powdered milk or powdered infant formula. It has also been found in sewer water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Were Any Illnesses Reported?

There have been no reports of people getting sick or dying of Cronobacter infections after drinking Premier Protein Shakes.

Even so, the manufacturer warns that “common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection.”

Premier Protein Recalled for Food Poisoning Risk

The Premier Protein recall only involves shakes produced in 11-oz. cartons with “BT” in the lot code. The lot code can be found on the top of the carton, or the side of a case, and will look like “xxxxBT.”

The following flavors are included in the recall:

  • Premier Protein Shake Chocolate
  • Premier Protein Shake Vanilla
  • Premier Protein Shake Café Latte

Infant Formula Linked to Deadly Outbreak of Cronobacter Infections

In February 2022, a massive amount of powdered infant formula was recalled after several babies died of Cronobacter infections. This outbreak highlights the serious risk that Cronobacter poses to people who have underlying health issues.

The company that manufactures Premier Protein also recalled several Nutritional Drink products for children and adults who need to eat a high-calorie high-protein diet, such as: Kate Farms Pediatric Standard, Imperial Med Plus, and Imperial Med Thickened Dairy Drink.

What is Cronobacter?

Cronobacter, also known as “Enterobacter sakazakii,” is a type of bacteria that has been found in dry foods, like milk powder, spices and herbs, powdered infant formula, herbal teas, and starches. The most serious complications of infection include:
